James Harrod papers : letters, deeds, and legal documents, 1775-1888, bulk 1775-1803.

This collection predominately pertains to the estate of James Harrod. The documents relating to the estate include his will, promissory notes that were paid by the estate, and purchases the estate made for the welfare of his daughter. Other items in the collection include a list of repairs done on his guns, a 1775 promissory note between Harrod and Daniel Boone, court summons, and court judgements. Harrod's wife Anne also produced papers relating to the estate. These include lists of items bought by the estate and formalizing payments made on promissory notes. There is also a marriage contract signed by Anne Harrod and her third husband, John Tadlock. Anne later divorced Tadlock, contending that James Harrod was still alive. Also included is a testamonial by Thomas Light about Anne Harrod, her daughter Margaret, and her daughter's husband, John Fontleroy.

James Harrod was a pioneer settler who established the first permanent settlement in Kentucky. This settlement was called Harrodstown which is today known as Harrodsburg. It was established in 1774.
